Rocket Launch ’06

For the 2006 launch of Dr Karl’s book, ‘It Ain’t Necessarily So…Bro’, we decided to do something a little bit different. Not content with the idea of the regular style of book launch (ie the cheap wine, the cubed cheese, and the insincere greeting of “sweetie darling, how ARE you?” filling the air), we came up with the idea of quite literally launching the book. After doing some hunting around, it seemed that if we could get this off the ground, then it might possibly be a World first. That, was too exciting to pass up. So, we approached the members of the Sydney University Rocket Society – yes, there is one! and set about planning just how we could accomplish this mission. As luck would have it, one of the main dudes (Jason Held) from the USyd Rocket Society was a former missile engineer with the United States Army. Of course he was. It was at this point, that we knew we were in capable hands, or at least we hoped that was the case.As the day of the launch drew closer, the initial test run took place. USyd Rocket peeps had successfully modified a prototype of Karl’s soon to be printed book into a rocket – they took the book, curled it up turning it into a rocket-shaped structure, put fins on it and shoved all the ‘explosives’ inside. With the prototype complete, it was time to head to the park to see if it really would fly…(If you’ve just watched the clip above of the test run, then you will now have seen that this little baby did fly, and how! The USyd Rocket Society were on fire.)Launching a ‘rocket’, even in book form, is not as simple as it might sound. There was a lot of paperwork to be dealt with (council approval etc) and of course approval from the aviation governing body in Australia, CASA (Civil Aviation Safety Authority). Good thing the USyd Rocket boys had a good relationship with CASA which made the filling out of forms and all round approval a much easier task. However, there were still rules. We had to call CASA 30 mins prior to lift off, and then again 5 mins prior for final lift off approval. If for some reason, and at the last minute, CASA felt it were unsafe for the launch to proceed, say like Bondi was suddenly under threat of invasion by New Zealand (different to the regular type of Bondi invasion, which comes in the form of the ‘backpacker’), then the launch would be OFF.Finally after months of planning, all was set for the launch on Sydney’s famous Bondi Beach. The crowd gathered and TV crew from Channel 7’s Sunrise program were there to capture the event live on camera. It was pretty nerve racking doing a live launch, what if it didn’t work? What if Dr Karl pressed the BIG RED button to send her up and nothing happened…
